Bugaboo Cameleon

One to consider

When you want ultimate flexibility and manoeuvrability

Expert review

The Bugaboo prams are somewhat of a phenomenon.  Three years ago they were an unknown brand and now it’s hard to walk down a high street without seeing one.  They have quickly become the ‘in’ pram and a lot of people put their popularity down to ‘fashion’.  Their quick rise to fame has also been helped by a large amount of celebrity endorsement. That being said, if it were purely a fashion thing, the success story would be over soon and I doubt that this will be the case with the Bugaboos.  As well as being fashionable, they are well thought out, well put together pushchairs that offer ultimate flexibility, outstanding manoeuvrability and great durability.

They don’t come cheap – The Cameleon is £599 and the Gecko sister model is £469.

That being said, if you were to piece together components of other models of pushchair, to try and form something that offered the same features as the Cameleon, you'd probably end up paying the same or more. This stroller is both a pram and a pushchair. It can handle city living, off road habitats and holidays by the beach or on the ski slopes! It's well built, and, unlike many models that are good for nothing after a year or two’s constant use, the Bugaboos should run the course whether that be two or even three kids, providing they are looked after.

The Bugaboo Cameleon will adapt to yours and your child's needs, depending on your lifestyle, the environment, or the season. With its swivel wheels in front, the Bugaboo Cameleon is very easy to manoeuvre - ideal for busy cities and shops. A flick of the handle (until the new 2008 model this was not as easy as on the Gecko or its predecessor The Frog because the handle height adjusters get in the way) puts the large wheels in front which then eliminates the hard work when walking over rougher terrain. On the beach or in the snow, it's a breeze to drag the Bugaboo Cameleon thanks it its unique two-wheel position.

It has superb suspension which can be adjusted as the child gets heavier and makes for a smooth ride and a pushchair that glides and barely needs to be pushed. This is also aided by the two larger pneumatic wheels. It also boasts a height-adjustable handlebar, a pushchair seat that can face both ways, ie the direction of travel or the person pushing and a chassis that will accommodate a full size Carrycot, the Maxi-Cosi CabrioFix Car Seat and a pushchair seat from about 6 months.

The defining feature of the Cameleon model is the fact that you can truly personalise the appearance of the stroller due to the many colour combinations.  Choose a base colour from one of four (charcoal, blue, sand or red) then choose up to 13 coordinating fabric covers that make up the hood, apron and seat cover. Should you choose pink for a girl this time, when it comes to the next time round , it is easy and not too expensive (around £70) to swap for blue, green, red, yellow, orange, sand, black, chocolate or off-white should you wish.  Some choose to buy more than one fabric straight off so that they can change the look of their pram as often as the mood takes them!  The fabrics are easy to remove and wash and replace.

As well as all the more obvious features, this pushchair also scores highly in safety - the brake system is definitely one of the best we've seen on a stroller and, what’s more, because it is operated from the handle bar, ladies wearing open toe sandals in the summer do not have to break any toes (or damage painted nails!) to release the brake!  Even the storage has been taken into account - once you are finished with the Carrycot part of the pram (around 6 months) instead of having a large, hard bodied Carrycot to store, you simply take the Carrycot fabric off the pushchair frame and fold it up and store it in a drawer or under a bed and then use the same frame to form the seat which sees your child through to 4 years.

There are some down sides of course as there are with any model of pushchair, however with the Bugaboos, I would say that the upsides more than compensate for the downsides.  The design of the pram means that it can not be folded in one piece, so whether you have a carrycot, car seat or stroller seat in place, these need to be removed first in order to fold the chassis.  This is something you get used to, but is a turn off for some and makes getting on a crowded bus, almost impossible if you don’t have another adult travelling with you.  Despite being suitable for most terrains and most activities, it is not a pushchair to jog with.  With all its enhanced features, the Cameleon is quite a bit heavier than its sister model the Gecko which is a less fancy version but still a damn good pushchair.  The 'quick release' wheels now feature 'non-puncture' tyres which, without stating the obvious, remove the worry of what do to when the tyres go flat!

All in all, if you can afford this, it is a pram most definitely worth checking out and considering what people sell them for second hand on e-bay, you can look at it as somewhat of an investment!

What the Cameleon has that the Gecko does not:

- the pushchair seat can also be used as a seat on the ground.

- the Carrycot has been approved for use for overnight sleeping

- the handle bar is height adjustable and consequently in its lowest position, when folded the Cameleon is more compact and will even fit in the boot of a Mini.

- you can adjust the wheel suspension as the child gets heavier / or to suit the terrain

- the seat / Carrycot sit higher on the wheels which means it is easier to access the shopping basket

-the seat / Carrycot frame is 2 inches longer so will accommodate a longer baby / taller child

-Larger, higher sun canopy means you will be able to continue to use the hood for longer (it will need to be removed as the child grows too tall).

- Larger under seat stroller bag for storage.

- Carrying handle on the Carrycot and seat unit for attaching toys to and easier portability

- A large variety of colour / fabric combinations to suit your taste

- base fabric is machine-washable 1000-denier nylon

- Tailored trim fabric is machine-washable made of super-soft fleece

THE LOW-DOWN

How Practical? - A very practical main pushchair, great in town, fantastic on rough terrain especially thanks to adjustable wheel suspension and terribly easy to manoeuvre
Defining features - Quality, mobility, appearance; in essence: design, form and function!
Who is it for?- For people wanting to push the Rolls-Royce of prams
Car boot size – Medium to large
Upsides – All the defining features (too many to relist)
Downsides – Not as compact as some and not possible to fold in one piece.  Not great for using on a busy bus (but then again, not many pushchairs are), not suitable for jogging
Budget - £599 expensive but worth it
What is included in the price – The Bugaboo Cameleon comes complete with a Carrycot / pushchair frame with accommodating Carrycot and stroller seat fabrics, Aerosleep mattress, underseat shopping bag, pushchair hood, rain cover, mosquito net, DVD and User Guide and a free ‘maintenance kit’ which includes pump, lubricant etc
Optional accessories – Fleece lined foot muff (choose coordinating or contrasting colour), cabriofix car seat adaptors, transport Bag, breezy sun canopy and sunshade, parasol, diaper bag, cup holder and Wheeled Board

I bought a Bugaboo Chameleon 6 months ago from John Lewis (Oxford Street). After 2 months the right hand handle screw fell out so I replaced it. The tension in the telescopic handle slowly reduced. Two weeks ago the left hand screw fell out so I decided to take the whole pram back to John Lewis to complain. Whilst explaining my issues to the customer serviced assistant he quickly pulled out of his draw a bag of replacement screws. He called it the "screw fix" and said they were aware of the problem and that it was a design fault. I rejected the quick fix get out solution and insisted on a replacement frame. I left the frame there to be sent back to Bugaboo and they provided me with a loan frame. Yesterday I had a call to say my frame was ready to collect so I went in this morning to pick it up. My old frame was produced with replacement screws. I again rejected the frame and the assistant agreed to give me a new design frame with the rivets which they had in stock. If you have the same issues as me I would insist on a replacement new design frame NOT the bag of screws. John Lewis customer service was 100%.

My Bee is only 7 months old and already the chassis has been replaced FOUR times due to handle bar problems - handle sticking, handle not locking, clips at side losing tension. I have been dealing with Bugaboo direct who I have to say have been friendly, apologetic and efficient(Victioria you have been brilliant), however I am well and truly frustrated now. I have lost all confidence in this buggy and every day wonder how long it will be before my latest bee flies back to Amsterdam. Karen Brown

I live in Spain and also have had the same problem with the handlebar. I was also on holiday and had to urgently get a screw on it because it was extremely insafe and unstable. POsted a claim today to service department, see what they have to day

We have just bought a Bugaboo Bee and have the same problem with the extending handle bar. I haven't even had the baby yet - we were just having a play - and the pulling force required to fold out the Bee was clearly too great for the handle to cope with. Meant it was impossible for me to fold out, as I ended up having to pull at chest height, so we had already made up our minds to return it. Hadn't even considered the danger of this happening when the baby was in the buggy!

I have the Cameleon and have exactly the same problem with the extending handle as many of you also seem to be experiencing. I am now on my second chassis and Bugaboo have refused to refund the money as they do not seem to think there is a problem!! It is a shocking waste of money and the Cameleon is not fit for purpose. It cannot cope with going up three steps to my flat door and it is supposedly designed to cope with all terrains!! I would be interested to hear if anyone has managed to get a refund as I am at my wits end. I was told today that my child should not be in the pram when going up the stairs which is clearly stated in the manual. To remove my child everytime I leave the house and come home is completely impractical and I think this is a huge manufacturing/design fault. The handle even extends itself when going down a pavement. Am I expected to leave my child at the road side while I cross over with the pram????? My third chassi is being delivered in a few days....I dread to think how many Bugaboo boxes will be in my flat as they still have not collected the last two. The customer service team are rude, condescending and very unhelpful. For a pram that is supposedly the best on the market I think it is a complete waste of money and is not fit for purpose.

An Update: Within 2 days of posting my complaint I was contacted by the Customer Service Manager in Amsterdam apologising for the problem. We were offered a complimentary pram (bee or chameleon) and if required a visit from a UK rep. Bugaboo also detailed the R&D process that was happening to sort the handlebar problem they had become aware of. With a lot of trepidation and soul searching we decided on a replacement chameleon and I'm happy to say that so far it has performed up to scratch (the handlebar mechanism has been modified and seems better). The customer service from Netherlands seems to be a LOT better than that from the UK. Will let you know if any problems develop (but by god I hope not).

Just the other week the screw on the left hand side of the handlebar fell out which led to the handle becoming really loose and wobbly - couldn't use it so put a screw I found at home in to hold it. Had to take these measures as was on holiday and needed to get home. Yesterday the screw on the right hand side fell out. So buggy is now totally unusable and unsafe. Such a shame as I love it in every other way. Don't expect to pay £600 and for this to happen. I also have the Quinny Buzz so will be using that from now on.

As an around town pushchair this is perfect as all terrain pushchair it is pants - mud clogs in the small wheels and the wheels stop turning. we are taking ours back as we feel we have been missold as my leisurely walks are more like workouts!

i note others have had similar problems with the chassis handlebar coming loose. we also purchased our bugaboo from john lewis, loved it, but after 2 months the problem started to develop with the handlebar. this was returned to JL and after 5 weeks we received a replacement. that was 2 weeks ago and today the new chassis has developed the same problem only more extreme, almost resulting in an accident. we are currently requesting a refund. JL stated this was the 20th return they have had to the particular brakch of the 2008 model.

In respect of my previous posting I have today written to Bugaboo UK about the issue (cut and pasted form the letter) 1. If there was a problem with a particular batch I would have expected some product warning/recall - this is obviously a health & safety issue for infants and I would have expected full responsibility from Bugaboo for the safety of children. 2. The original mechanism of a screw was obviously inadequate otherwise why change it to a rivet –which is also inadequate. 3. The appalling customer service for its customers shown by Bugaboo. will let you know...

We also had a similar problem today with the adjustable handle mechanism seemingly loose. I friend of mine had the same problem. We hope that the babyshop in Oslo will fix the problem, although their service today was horribly bad. The mechanism of the adjustable handle is not very strong, as there´s only one small screw holding everything together. Bugaboo has to deal with this mechanism and come up with something better. I´m really afraid of losing our baby down the stairs. AHM

i have had the bugaboo and it didnt last long it got scratched to easy, the whole folding and unfolding was a mess, the brakes if you dont get it in the slots first time and you think it is,that is until your on the bus thinking its brakes are on and there not is scary!!the handle rocks back and forth with makes it look dodgy!!i was in love with this till i had it,paying that amount of money, you worry about scratching it ,getting caught in the rain with such a stupid idly tight rain cover, sure it looks good but thats what your paying for, paying for a fashion pram that serves no right as a pram everyday situations!!

IMPORTANT Dear gcharper80 A summarised version of our problem We had a similar problem to yours with the adjustable handle mechanism seemingly loose going up and down stairs. The screw holding the adjuster into the frame needed frequent tightening. We thought this was just a one of those things from everyday use (despite the cost!) however one day the mechanism suddenly became completely loose and the pram fell down 2 stairs - screaming wife and child etc. The screw had fallen out and the locking mechanism wouldn't function. On discussion with John Lewis they had several customers with the same problem and bugaboo were aware of the problem and replacing the chassis. We eventually got a replacement chassis and the screw had been replaced by a rivet. Within 2 weeks the rivet snapped with the pram falling down 2 steps until the handle locked at its maximum height. Bugaboo were adamant that this couldn't happen and refused a refund - the store would have to "take the hit". We had lost faith in this pram as I thought it wasn't fit for purpose. JL agreed refunded us the money (i'll buy the replacement from them!) JL were gong to inform their buyers that the replacement had a ongoing problem. I am taking this further to highlight... 1) why there was/is no product recall - this is after all a baby's safety! 2) the appalling attitude of bugaboo my wife likes the bugaboo bee but I'll be dammed if I'll give them any more cash Still over £150 out of pocket for the "accessories"

The handle moves up and down about 4 inches when pushing up steps which is highly annoying. I don't think the weight is distributed equally, my son is a big 11 month old and I can not use it in reverse position as his weight is over the front wheels and I can't tip it up to get up a curb. It scratches really easy. This is not going to last up to 36lbs as claimed by bugaboo. My son is 11 months, 23 lbs and his head is reaching the top of the hood already. If you and you partner are tall, the chances are you'll have a long baby like me, so don't get a Bugaboo as it won't last past his second year, my daughter was just 2 when we got it for my newborn as she was way too big for it, she was average build for her age! It looks mighty fine, I have it in Denim and people are always looking, but I'd sooner have gone for a M&P Pramette which I had with my first child - couldn't fault that, plus half the price!

We have had Cameleon almost 2 years and I love the manouverability - a hundred times easier than other puschairs I've tried. We live in city centre and it is really easy to move about with this buggy. Having said that, I'm glad I don't have to fold it on a regular basis as I find it really difficult to collapse the frame! And the fact that it is in 2 parts is a bit annoying too. Also, now that my son is approaching 2 yrs age, he's already growing out of it - we will have to remove the sun canopy shortly as his head pokes through otherwise! But all in all, I love the buggy and think it was worth every penny. Warmly recommended.

A great pram but this is NOT a pram you want to be putting in and out of a car on a regular basis! So, if that's a requirement/ your way of life, then you should consider something else ...

Love it! We've both said, after our jaws nearly hit the floor from the total bill for all the 'bits', that it's the best buy since our little girl was born. Everything about it is functional and it's pretty robust!

We have used the Bugaboo Chameleon for 18 months now and are very happy with it. In the early days our daughter slept in the carrycot overnight, saving us money on a moses basket. It is so easy to push and deals with rough terrain well, as well as scooting about town. My husband is quite tall and I'm short so the adjustable handle is a great idea. We initially thought this buggy was very expensive but it has served us well, our daughter is always comfortable in it and it's well-made - never had any problems with it!
