Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP)

This is a protein, produced by the foetus's liver, which can be detected in the mother's blood - most accurately between the 16th and 18th weeks of pregnancy. High levels of AFP may be associated with a neural tube birth defect called spina bifida; low levels of AFP may be associated with Down's syndrome.
